EU plans military operation in Mali: Voice of Russia

The final declaration of the summit reads that the format of the operation has not been determined yet.

There are two main scenarios: confining the aid to sending European instructors and military advisers to that country or complementing the group of instructors and advisers with a composite battalion (400 men) of special mission units for practical support of the government forces in the struggle against illegal armed gangs.

Most EU countries would rather refrain from sending military forces but they fear that training local soldiers could prove insufficient for reversing the situation in the country and preventing it from growing into a regional conflict.
