CANADA EXPERIENCES EXTREME WEATHER: Is Geo-Engineering The Culprit?

Yesterday, shortly after the questionable HAARP-shut-down reports made their way around the internet and were refuted by Dutchsinse and others, there were over 30 tornado warnings in Ontario.?? Quebec also suffered extreme weather (1 person died) and so did Saskatchewan.? Golf-ball sized hail was seen in Regina.

In Quebec The Weather Network reported,

Hundreds of thousands of people are without power across southern Quebec due to the intense weather.

Fallen trees and downed power lines left a lot of work for Hydro Quebec employees.

At its peak, Montreal and the Laurentians had over 130,000 people without power.

There are still widespread power outages.

Currently almost 60,000 people have no electricity in Montreal, over 110,000 in the Laurentians and 69,000 people are without power in Laval.

For Ontario, The Weather Network reported,

At one point, more than 2.5 million people across southern Ontario were under a tornado warning ? major population centres stretching from Niagara Falls through to Mississauga and Peel Region, along with areas near Orangeville, Barrie and parts of Ottawa.

Those were eventually dropped, with no tornadoes confirmed, but Environment Canada says at least three funnel clouds were reported.

This news anchor at The Weather Network was mentioning that a caller had said something like ?I?ve never seen clouds that look like that in my life? and she attempted to reassure us that these are indeed normal ?mammatus clouds? (although it seems that this 5minute video was taken down and replaced by a 2minute video where they do not discuss the mammatus clouds).

Are they normal?

I did a search for these clouds and found some that looked even more dramatic (1, 2).? Even if these clouds are associated with storms, are we not indeed seeing a dramatic increase in storms and odd weather all over the world?

A couple weeks ago Toronto got flooded.? A few weeks before that, Calgary got flooded and then the RCMP came in and took people?s guns, Katrina-style.? There were compelling arguments saying that geo-engineering played a significant/direct role in the Calgary floods.? India had at least 130 people die due to flooding a couple weeks before that.? Europe had massive flooding a few weeks ago and there was so much other news happening at the time that I could barely report on it.? All I was able to find before it became ?old news? was an article titled ?Iran condoles with German flood victims?.

Right now at 8:18am, the day after the tornado warning in Ottawa I?m seeing a chemtrail right above me and the sky getting whiter and whiter (?in fact, now as I finish and proofread this article, the sky has become completely white).

In this next shot we can see what appears to be chemtrails sprayed above the clouds during the storm in Montreal.? If these are not chemtrails then they are definitely really straight long clouds seemingly stretching all the way across the sky.

Capital came through quake well - mayor

Civil Defence says people in Wellington can return to work from Tuesday morning following checks to the central business district after a strong earthquake at the weekend.

Structural engineers spent Monday assessing many buildings for damage after Sunday's 6.5-magnitude quake at 5.09pm off the Marlborough coast at a depth of 17km. A second quake measuring 5.2 happened minutes later and there have been hundreds of aftershocks.

Civil Defence had urged workers to stay home on Monday due to the risk from damaged buildings. Acting regional manager Rian Van Schalkwyk told Radio New Zealand's Checkpoint programme it has identified and cordoned off external damage on 35 buildings. These would be reassessed on Tuesday morning, however it was safe for people to return to work then.

Wellington City Council said its building inspectors have not found any significant damage in the central city. Chief building officer Richard Toner said most of the damage is cosmetic, rather than structural. However, he said building owners need to ensure that they carry out their own inspections, and several car parks need further assessment before they are cleared.

The Fire Service set up a command unit on The Terrace to provide support to Urban Search and Rescue engineers and technicians. Police said they would maintain a strong presence in the central city overnight on Monday with double the usual number of staff on duty.

Mayor Celia Wade-Brown said the capital has come through the quake relatively unscathed and would soon return to business as usual. She said the council had already embarked on a multimillion-dollar programme to strengthen quake-prone buildings and infrastructure.

Ms Wade-Brown said Sunday's quake serves as a reminder that people need to be prepared and know what to do when the "big one" does hit. She said the risk of a catastrophic quake hasn't changed from it was last week and the capital is always bracing for a big tremor.

GNS Science said it is almost certain there would be another quake greater than magnitude 5 in the next week. Project director Ken Gledhill told a Wellington Regional Emergency Management briefing on Monday afternoon there has been more than 1000 aftershocks since a 5.7-magnitude quake on Friday and they would continue for the next few weeks.

Wellington Hospital has not reported any damage, but four patients with minor injuries were treated after Sunday's quake. One was a man who was knocked out when a television fell on him.

Train services resume, airport open

Train services resumed across the Wellington network on Monday afternoon. KiwiRail said it has completed inspections on all lines and trains are running on a half-hourly timetable.

Normal operations are set to resume on Tuesday, but Tranz Metro said services may be suspended again if there are any strong aftershocks and is advising passengers to check its website before travelling.

Wellington Airport is open but runways are being checked regularly following aftershocks and there could be minor delays on Monday. Ferries are operating and ordinary bus services are running as usual.

Civil Defence said people should travel only if it is essential, and commuters in the greater Wellington region are advised to drive with patience and care.

Regional council chairperson Fran Wilde said work has begun to make Wellington's port fully operational as soon as possible. She said a section of the road and sea wall - built on reclaimed land at the southern end of the port - has collapsed into the sea, but it isn't having any major effect on port activities.

Ms Wilde said some buildings have suffered water damage as a result of fire sprinklers being set off by Sunday's quake.

Many buildings closed

Several buildings and offices were shut on Monday, including council buildings, ANZ branches, ACC offices and Westpac Stadium. Te Papa museum is also closed, but a spokesperson said it has had only superficial damage to its store and some exhibits have moved out of place.

Victoria University has been closed.

RADIO NEW ZEALAND

Most university campuses are closed, including Victoria's, but Massey said it is ready to reopen on Tuesday. The Ministry of Justice said all courts would be operating as usual from Tuesday.

Engineers have completed a safety review of three major buildings on the waterfront, including that occupied by the BNZ, which suffered considerable interior damage.

The BNZ building is owned by Centreport. Chairperson Warren Larsen said it has been approved as structurally safe. However, he said there is a lot of damage inside including ceiling units that have fallen and water damage caused by the failure of a fire system.

Mr Larsen said no one can work in the building until the ceiling is repaired and they would be asking engineers to assess why the ceiling collapsed when ceilings in nearby buildings remained intact.

Meanwhile, buildings at Parliament have suffered superficial damage, but are deemed safe to enter. Some shops in central Wellington were open on Monday.

The Mercure Hotel on Willis Street, which was evacuated on Sunday after possible damage to one of the floors was identified, has been cleared by inspectors to reopen. Guests were relocated for the night to its sister hotel, the Ibis.

Claims will be honoured - PM

Prime Minister John Key on Monday reassured the public that any claims lodged with the Earthquake Commission would be honoured.

Mr Key said the EQC fund has essentially been run down to zero due claims from the Canterbury earthquakes, but the Government will top it up if necessary. He could not put a dollar figure on the damage in Wellington, but said he has been advised that the quake is not a major financial event.

Sunday's quake was stronger than the 6.3 magnitude tremor which struck Christchurch on 22 February 2011, killing 185 people. New Zealand experiences more than 14,000 earthquakes a year, but about 20 are in excess of magnitude 5.0.

(Reuters) - More than 8,000 French households' tax bills topped 100 percent of their income last year, the business newspaper Les Echos reported on Saturday, citing Finance Ministry data.

The newspaper said that the exceptionally high level of taxation was due to a one-off levy last year on 2011 incomes for households with[..]ets of more than 1.3 million euros ($1.67 million).

President Francois Hollande's Socialist government imposed the tax surcharge last year, shortly after taking office, to offset the impact of a rebate scheme created by its conservative predecessor to cap an individual's overall taxation at 50 percent of income.

The government has been forced to redraft a proposed bill to levy a temporary 75 percent tax on earnings over 1 million euros, which had been one of Hollande's campaign pledges.

The Constitutional Council has judged such a high rate of taxation to be unfair, leaving the government to rehash it to hit companies rather than individuals.

Since then, a top administrative court has determined that a marginal tax rate higher than 66.66 percent on a single household risked being considered as confiscatory by the council.

Les Echos reported that nearly 12,000 households paid taxes last year worth more than 75 percent of their 2011 revenues due to the exceptional levy. ($1 = 0.7798 euros)

Lovelorn frogs bag closest crooner

May 20, 2013 ? What lures a lady frog to her lover? Good looks, the sound of his voice, the size of his pad or none of the above? After weighing up their options, female strawberry poison frogs (Oophaga pumilio) bag the closest crooner they can, finds research in BioMed Central's open access journal Frontiers of Zoology. This seemingly short-sighted strategy turns out to be the optimal mate choice strategy for these colourful frogs.

Males of the species congregate in the Costa Rican rain forest 'lek-style' to display and call together, giving females the chance to weigh up multiple males at once. But despite their best efforts, build and territory size, females tend to mate with the closest calling male, Ivonne Meuche from the University of Veterinary Medicine, Hannover, Germany, and colleagues report.

The find was confirmed by playback experiments where females, played recordings of various male calls, failed to discriminate between different call rates or frequencies, preferring instead, the nearest speaker.

Female mate choice is a tricky business. Some species chose the first mate that is 'good enough' whilst others seek out and compare many mates before returning to choose the fittest. But the simplest, least costly option is to mate with the first or nearest male encountered, regardless of quality. The strategy doesn't seem an evolutionary winner as it means that nearby, unfit frogs sometimes get to pass on their genes at the expense of more distant, genetically-superior specimens. But it does make sense in certain situations.

Non-choosy behaviour like this has been noted in fishes, and some frog species with a lek-like mating system. It's thought the strategy works for them because it reduces 'costs' in terms of search time and competition for mates. Female strawberry poison frogs may also benefit little from 'shopping around' because strong inter-male competition means the available mates are all much of a muchness.

The team also noted that females unable to find a mate within a certain time period ended up laying unfertilised eggs that never hatch. So in species, like the strawberry poison dart frog, where the choosing sex outnumbers the chosen sex, it makes sense to 'grab the nearest guy' rather than run the risk of not mating at all.

Former Wyoming legislator worked to legalize MMA, now getting in the cage

As a state legislator in Wyoming, Bryan Pedersen helped author the bill to legalize and regulate MMA in his home state. This weekend, he will test that bill by fighting at the Colosseum Fight Series, the first fights in Cheyenne since the bill passed.

Pedersen, who is 38 years old, has trained in MMA for the past four years. Like many fighters, he originally tried out the sport for fitness reasons only. But once MMA was allowed in his state, and Cheyenne was set to host fights, Pedersen couldn't help but say yes to an offer to fight on the CFS card.

"This is not something I normally do," he said to the Wyoming Star-Tribune. "But I really believe in the sport."

He served for six years in the Wyoming state legislature. Now a financial consultant, he plans on making this both his debut and retirement bout. The weigh-ins will take place at a familiar venue for Pedersen -- the steps of the Wyoming State Capitol Building.

Pedersen is taking the fight seriously, as he drives an hour and a half daily to Easton Training Center in Colorado, the training home of UFC veteran Eliot Marshall.

"I have a goal," he said. "Without a goal, you wouldn?t do it. It creates a sense of urgency and panic. Because every day I?m not training, my opponent is probably getting better. And I?m not."

He's the latest government official to set his sights on the cage, though Pedersen appears to be taking his fight more seriously than the two mayors in south Florida who are planning a bout. Perhaps MMA should become part of the legislative process.

Spokesman for Ansar Dine arrested in Mauritania

NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania (AP) ? The man who acted as the spokesman for one of the three al-Qaida-linked groups occupying northern Mali turned himself in over the weekend to Mauritanian authorities on the border, an intelligence official briefed on the matter confirmed on Monday.

Sanda Ould Boumana, the Timbuktu-based spokesman for Ansar Dine, is being transferred to Mauritania's capital, Nouakchott. The official, who insisted on anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the press, said that Ould Boumana had previously tried to negotiate a deal with Algeria, which also borders Mali.

"Ould Boumana said that he wishes to be arrested and tried in Mauritania," said the intelligence agent. "He will be transferred to Nouakchott to be interrogated by our specialists on terrorism."

Ansar Dine, or "Defenders of the Faith," invaded northern Mali in the last days of March 2012. The group's leader, Iyad Ag Ghali, is a native of Kidal, the northernmost provincial capital in Mali which became Ansar Dine's fief after the fall of the north to the extremists. In conjunction with al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, Ansar Dine also occupied the storied city of Timbuktu ? Ould Boumana's hometown. He became Ansar Dine's spokesman and de facto leader in Timbuktu, and residents say that they often saw him going to meetings alongside the al-Qaida cell leaders. He was closely involved in imposing Shariah rule on Timbuktu, including overseeing the public amputation of an accused thief.

Ould Boumana fled the city in January, as French commandos advanced to end the extremists' control of the town.

In recent weeks, the Mauritanian news portal, Nouakchott Information Agency, a site that is frequently used by local jihadists to communicate with the outside world, reported that they had spoken to Ould Boumana and that he was pleading for asylum in Algeria.

Authorities: Hofstra student was killed by police

MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) ? A Hofstra University student being held in a headlock at gunpoint by an intruder was accidently shot and killed by a police officer who had responded to the home invasion at an off-campus home, police said Saturday.

Junior public relations major Andrea Rebello was shot once in the head early Friday morning by an officer who opened fire after the masked intruder pointed a gun at the officer while holding the 21-year-old student, Nassau County homicide squad Lt. John Azzata said.

In a tense confrontation with the officer, gunman Dalton Smith "menaces our police officer, points his gun at the police officer," Azzata said. The officer opened fire, killing Smith and his hostage.

Azzata said the Nassau County police officer fired eight shots at Smith, who police described as having an "extensive" criminal background. Smith was hit seven times and died. Rebello was shot once in the head.

"He kept saying, 'I'm going to kill her,' and then he pointed the gun at the police officer," Azzata said.

A loaded 9 mm handgun with a serial number scratched off was found at the scene, police said.

Nassau County Police Commissioner Thomas Dale said he had traveled to Rebello's Tarrytown, N.Y., home to explain to Rebello's parents what happened.

"I felt obligated as a police commissioner and as a parent to inform them as soon as all the forensic results were completed," Dale said.

The veteran police officer, who was not identified, has about 12 years of experience on the Nassau County police force and previously spent several years as a New York City police officer, Dale said.

The officer is currently out on sick leave. He will be the focus of an internal police investigation once the criminal investigation is completed, which is standard police procedure in any officer-involved shooting, the commissioner said.

Earlier Saturday, police announced that Smith, 30, had been wanted on a parole violation related to a first-degree robbery conviction and had an arrest history dating back nearly 15 years.

The shooting came just days before the school's commencement ceremonies, which are scheduled to take place Sunday.

A university spokeswoman said students will be handed white ribbons to wear in memory of Rebello. The shooting, which took place just steps from campus, has cast a pall over the university community as it geared up for commencement on Sunday.

"Today is the last day of finals and this should be a happy day on campus; but it's not," Hofstra freshman Scott Aharoni of Great Neck, said Friday as he passed through the area rife with yellow crime-scene tape. "It's really sad."

Rebello was in the two-story home with her twin sister Jessica, a third woman and a man when Smith, wearing a ski mask, walked into the house through an open front door, Azzata said. Smith demanded valuables and was told they were upstairs, Azzata said.

Smith, apparently unsatisfied with the valuables upstairs, asked if any of the four had a bank account and could withdraw money, Azzata said. The intruder then allowed the unidentified woman to leave and collect money from an ATM, telling her she had only eight minutes to come back with cash before he killed one of her friends, Azzata said.

The woman left for the bank and called 911, according to Azzata.

Minutes later, two police officers arrived at the home and found Rebello's twin sister Jessica running out of the front door and the male guest hiding behind a couch on the first floor, Azzata said.

One of the officers entered the home and encountered Smith holding onto Rebello in a headlock, coming down the stairs, Azzata said. Smith pulled Rebello closer and started moving backward toward a rear door of the house, pointing the gun at her head before eventually threatening the officer, Azzata said.

Rebello's family declined comment Saturday.

The Rev. Osvaldo Franklin, who gave Rebello and her sister Jessica their first communions, on Saturday night told The Associated Press their mother, Nella, couldn't even speak to him earlier in the day.

"She was so devastated," said Franklin. "She's just crying. We have to pray for Andrea, to pray for Jessica because she needs help."

Franklin said a funeral is scheduled for Wednesday at Teresa of Avila Church in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., and will be in Portuguese.

"The family's a very good family, they have very good values," he said. "I gave them first communion to Andrea and Jessica and they started to help me in the mass for many years. They are a very good, very devoted family."

Opinion: Anyone hoping for an extended ?American Idol? tribute to Randy Jackson on Thursday?s finale had to wait an awfully long time for a minimal payoff.

The man?s been a judge on the show for 12 years. He?s brought catchphrases such as ?In it to win it!? into our national database of clich?s. He?s dealt with cranky personalities and divas, and sat through every single terrible group performance during Hollywood weeks. Plus he wears loud clothing for every episode without complaints. Surely the least he deserved was a show-stopping send-off!

And he gave "Idol" every chance to make that happen. Like a man hinting that he wants his own surprise party, Randy announced his retirement from the show last week, giving producers ample time to throw something together.

?Idol? could have sent off their lone remaining original judge in style, much like the Simon Cowell appreciation tour that occurred when the acerbic judge departed after season nine. Plus, Mariah Carey was right there already. How hard would it have been to get a giant cake for her to burst out of?

No dice.

Instead, it wasn?t until almost 90 minutes into a two-hour show that Ryan Seacrest walked behind the judges? podium to say, ?Tonight is the end of an era. This evening we say thank you very much and goodbye to Randy Jackson.?

?The new age begins,? Mariah said helpfully.

The lights dropped. The tape rolled. And what did viewers get?

First, a brief bit involving dogs discussing the news in a board room. Get it? Because Randy calls everyone ?dawg?! Hilarious! But it's great to see that dogs can gather indoors for something other than a poker game.

Then a taped interview saw Randy note, ?If ?Idol? were around and was an opportunity for me growing up, I would have auditioned and won it five times.? It illustrated that after a dozen years, he still doesn?t have a firm grasp on the rules of the competition, or his own singing voice. (Randy, buddy, you?re a bass guitarist, not a front man.)

The wayback machine took the audience to Kelly Clarkson?s audition, and to footage of Randy, Simon and Paula Abdul when they were all much more natural looking and didn?t seem to be a creation of wardrobe and makeup. Long-term viewers sighed and remembered the good old days when the concept was fresh.

?Not in a trillion, billion years would this man ever make it to Hollywood,? Simon said.

(How great would it have been had that been followed by Randy saying, "Not in a trillion billion years can you make a different reality singing competition successful without me being a party of it as well?")

Also, did the show really have to use Daniel Powter?s ?Bad Day? as the musical accompaniment? For years, that was the song that ?Idol? losers heard upon their departure each week. If nothing else, didn?t Randy at least rate someone performing it live?

All too soon -- less than three minutes after it began -- the clip show ended, and the pink-jacketed Randy was taking his final bows.

?By the way, Randy, I think I speak on behalf on a lot of people in America and our producers when I say the door is always open, my brother,? Ryan said. And the show moved on.

That?s it? That?s all the man gets after a dozen years?

Hope Ryan is taking notice. He?ll clearly have to plan his own wrap party when the time comes.

Commies, Nukes, and Flying Cars: What Seniors Predicted For 2076

The 1970s was a tough decade for America. Widespread distrust in government, rising inflation, the oil crisis, and disco were all wreaking havoc on the nation.

There was tremendous uncertainty about the future of the country. And yet, 1976 was the U.S. Bicentennial; 200 years since the founding of the United States and Americans were reflecting on not only the last 200 years, but the next 100.

Throughout 1976, American newspapers would often publish predictions for the year 2076. Some of my favorite predictions come from average citizens. The kids of 1976 would often combine the most optimistic visions of the time (like Jetsons-eque homes) with the dominant Cold War fears of the era (like images of mushroom clouds destroying all life on Earth). I'll let you decide for yourself if the robot president of 2076 is an optimistic or pessimistic vision.

But some of the most decidedly pessimistic predictions for the future came from the most senior of American citizens. The July 4, 1976 edition of the Grand Prairie Daily News in Grand Prairie, Texas included predictions from elderly people who were asked to envision America in the year 2076. Some of those predictions are below.

The last prediction is for the year 2000, which really speaks to how dominant that number was in the minds of 20th century Americans ? the big round number of the future. The predictions were all handwritten, and if I may say so they wouldn't sound very different from predictions you'd hear from some people in the year 2013.

To whom it may concern ?

If you are reading this 100 years from now one of my predictions will not have come true. I believe that with every atomic weapon on this Earth there is sure to be some foolish individual to set at least one of them off. If this "idiot" succeeds in doing this, nuclear devastation is inevitable.

If we aren't all destroyed in this manner it is reasonably safe to say that Communism is the next of our troubles. At some point in the future of this country I believe a Communist takeover will befall us. In some cases that could be worst than total destruction.

This is a definitely pessimistic outlook, but who's to say it won't come true.

One hundred years from now people will be riding moving sidewalks and riding airborn vehicles. The street will be too crowded to get around in and people will be fighting to protect what property they do have. They will have no farm land left because the Earth will be crowded with houses and apartments. People will live on the ocean, in big houseboats. They will work hard to get enough to pay for things. Most of the work will be pushing buttons. The Earth will have very much pollution and it will cause many diseases. There will be pills of all kinds to eat for their meals and to protect from diseases. Many wars will destroy more land and everyone will be afraid of the atomic bomb blowing up their country. There will be a TV telephone to see the one you are talking to, and the world will be one big mess.

In the year 2000 there may be Martians inhabiting the earth. All people will be adapted to other places. We might find another solar system.

People from the lost continent Atlantis may come and teach us new ways of life or again some sickness might have struck them and they may attack us.

If there are such people, and if they do attack us, we must be ready.

Which 'Star Trek' crew wins out -- TV or movie?

Casting any movie is tough, but try casting a "Star Trek" movie, knowing that the original television characters are already dearly beloved by millions of devoted fans. Few actors are as associated with their roles as William Shatner as Captain Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as Spock. Yet when Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto took over those roles in the 2009 film "Star Trek," reviews were mostly quite positive. As Pine, Quinto and co-stars prepare to beam down to theaters once again in "Star Trek Into Darkness," let's take a look at how the new actors fill out their Starfleet uniforms.

Chris Pine plays Capt. Kirk in the new "Star Trek" movies, but he can't beat the classic William Shatner.

The Shat has built a fine post-?Trek? career -- once he accepted with good humor that he would never, ever be forgotten as Kirk. But that aside, Classic Kirk has to rule over New Kirk. Classic Kirk had a twinkle in his eye, was never afraid to bare a chest, and had a way with a universe?s worth of ladies. We haven?t seen that yet in New Kirk, who?s more of a tomcat than a ladies? man and far from an unquestioned leader. Plus, only Classic Kirk has proven he can create a bazooka out of a log, dirt and gemstones.

New: Karl Urban

Karl Urban and DeForest Kelley both have their good points as Bones, but the new guy, Urban, is a handsome bad boy.

Okay, so Classic Bones wasn?t afraid to smack a hoity-toity pregnant lady if he needed to do an examination. But something about his eternal grumpiness and pointed Spock-like eyebrows made Kelley's version of the doctor a little hard to like. New Bones is good looking enough to give Kirk a run for his money (if you like ?em dark and mercurial), he rocks a beard and swigs from a flask when necessary. New Bones is a bad boy as well as a doc, and that is the wave of the future.

Bravo, Zachary Quinto! The actor has taken on Leonard Nimoy's famed Spock and given him a modern update.

The old neck-pincher is one of the toughest decisions to make, particularly since Classic Spock (or rather, Spock Prime) makes an appearance in the rebooted series. The casting of Quinto as a youthful Nimoy is spot-on, unlike many of the other cast choices ? and the 2009 film even showed a pre-adolescent Spock on top of everything else. In a way, this is the best blended character with some of the series? most memorable personality quirks and special powers. How can we choose just one?

Simon Pegg isn't quite as devoted to the Enterprise as the original Scotty, James Doohan -- and that's a good thing.

You know, Classic Scotty really, really loved the Enterprise. Possibly a bit too much. Sure, he was the engineer and knew all of the inner workings of the ship, but sometimes you had to wonder if it made him a little touched in the head, being stuck down in the boiler room all the time. (No wonder he could outdrink an alien.) No such issue with New Scotty, who is still getting to know the big old girl and may take a long time to find his love connection. And that?s good for tension and comedy.

Which Sulu rules, John Cho or George Takei? It's a tie!

In the 2009 film, Sulu got a few big moments ?- such as when he had to skydive from space and parachute onto a drilling platform, then fight off some Romulans. But the sword battle part of that scene was really an homage to one of Classic Sulu?s greatest scenes: When his inner swashbuckler comes to light and he runs around waving an epee. At the moment, there?s just not enough information on New Sulu to warrant leaving Classic Sulu behind, so we?d tend to lean toward Classic Sulu (oh, myyyy!) ? but let?s consider this the wild card in the bunch.

New Chekov Anton Yelchin is a real Russian, unlike Walter Koenig from the classic series.

First off, if you?re gonna have a Russian on the Enterprise, hire a dang Russian. All due respect to Classic Chekov, but a Monkee look-alike from Chicago doesn?t hold much of a candle to New Chekov, whose portrayer hails from Leningrad and plays him as more delightfully impulsive than the originator. Plus, he was able to save Spock?s father thanks to some fantastical manipulation of the transporter. And he?s a navigator!

New: Zoe Saldana

Zoe Saldana's Uhura serves mostly as eye candy, whereas Nichelle Nichols juggled many roles.

Here?s a surprise: A show that began in the 1960s is better at handling its one regular female crew member than one in the new millennium. New Uhura served largely as eye candy and as a sex object for New Kirk, even if she could kick more butt and talk dirty. Classic Uhura managed to juggle all of her subspace frequencies far better -- and of course was the shared co-conspirator in one of TV?s first interracial kisses, when she and Classic Kirk locked lips.

Advantage: Classic Uhura

Final tallies: Four classics and five from the new bunch (though Spock and Sulu bridge both categories). Surprise! Sugar-sweetened beverages associated with increased kidney stone risk

May 15, 2013 ? Twenty percent of American males and 10 percent of American females will experience a kidney stone at some point in their lifetime. Often, these patients will be advised to drink more fluids as a way to prevent future stone formation. Now, new research from Brigham and Women's Hospital finds that some beverages may be more helpful than others when it comes to preventing recurrent kidney stones.

In a study published online May 15, 2013 in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (CJASN), researchers report that the consumption of sugar sweetened soda and punch is associated with a higher risk of stone formation.

"Our study found that the relation between fluid intake and kidney stones may be dependent on the type of beverage consumed," explained Gary Curhan, MD, ScD, a physician in the Channing Division of Network Medicine at BWH and senior author of this study. "We found that higher consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks was associated with a higher incidence of kidney stones."

The researchers analyzed data from three ongoing cohorts, the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study (HPFS), and both the Nurses' Health Study I (NHS I) and II (NHS II). The total analysis involved 194,095 participants over a median follow-up of more than 8 years. Participants in all the three cohorts had been asked to complete biennial questionnaires with information on medical history, lifestyle, and medication. Questions on diet were updated every four years. They found that participants who consumed one or more sugar-sweetened cola servings per day had a 23 percent higher risk of developing kidney stones compared with those participants consuming less than one serving per week. This was true for consuming sugar-sweetened non cola as well, such as punch. They also found that some beverages, such as coffee, tea and orange juice, were associated with a lower risk of stone formation.

"Our prospective study confirms that some beverages are associated with a lower risk of kidney stone formation, whereas others are associated with a higher risk," explained Pietro Manuel Ferraro, MD, a physician at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Rome and corresponding author of this study. "Although higher total fluid intake reduces the risk of stone formation, this information about individual beverages may be useful for general practitioners seeking to implement strategies to reduce stone formation in their patients."

Google and NASA team up for D-Wave-powered Quantum Artificial Intelligence Lab

Google. NASA. Quantum computers. Seriously, everything about the new Quantum Artificial Intelligence Lab at the Ames Research Center is exciting. The joint effort between Mountain View and America's space agency will put a 512 qubit machine from D-Wave at the disposal of researchers from around the globe, with the USRA (Universities Space Research Association) inviting teams of scientists and engineers to share time on the unique super computer. The goal is to study how quantum computing might be leveraged to advance machine learning, a branch of AI that has proven crucial to Google's success. The internet giant has already done some work with quantum computing before, now the goal is to see if its experimentation can translate into real world results. The idea, for Google at least, is to combine the extreme (but highly-specialized) power of the quantum bit with its oceans of traditional data centers to build more accurate models for everything from speech recognition to web search. And maybe, just maybe, with the help of quantum computers your phone will finally realize you didn't mean to say "duck."
