Imprisoned Tymoshenko makes video appeal

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) ? Ukraine's jailed former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko urged her country Saturday to defeat President Viktor Yanukovych's party in next month's parliamentary election.

In an emotional video appeal, Tymoshenko accused Yanukovych of turning Ukraine into a "police state."

Her lawyer says the video, filmed Friday, was recorded by him on a cellphone in a hospital where she is receiving treatment for back pain. It was the first such video since the former prime minister was jailed over a year ago on charges of abusing her office during natural gas import negotiations with Russia in 2009.

The West has condemned her imprisonment as politically motivated and the European Union has put on hold a key cooperation deal with Kiev over Tymoshenko's jailing.

Tymoshenko, 51, the country's top opposition leader, denies all the charges against her, and accuses Yanukovych of throwing her in jail to bar her from the contesting the Oct. 28 election.

In the video, Tymoshenko urges Ukrainians to support her party in the vote and end what she called Yanukovych's "criminal" rule.

"Today, unfortunately, the whole country lives under a criminal authority," said a pale-looking Tymoshenko, wearing a white shirt, her hair combed into a long blond braid.

Yanukovych's Party of Regions hopes to maintain its parliamentary majority, but will struggle to do so in the face of an opposition re-energized by Tymoshenko's jailing. The next presidential election is in 2015.

Yanukovych's office declined to comment on the video.

HORSE RACING: Bob Baffert, Rafael Bejarano form imposing team at

Game On Dude, with Rafael Bejarano aboard, won Saturday's Grade I $250,000 Awesome Again Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita. (Benoit Photo)

ARCADIA - It was a big day at Santa Anita on Saturday for trainer Bob Baffert and jockey Rafael Bejarano, who teamed up to win three of five $250,000 Grade I races.

It also was a good day for the track, which drew a crowd of 17,565 despite warm temperatures.

This is the second year of Santa Anita's autumn meet, which replaced the long-standing Oak Tree meet. Saturday's crowd was larger than any last year.

The big win for the team of Baffert and Bejarano came in the 10th race on the 11-race card, the Awesome Again Stakes, with Game On Dude showing he is on his game.

Game On Dude, a 5-year-old gelding, went off as the 2-1 favorite and didn't disappoint his backers in winning going away by 3 1/4 lengths over Nonios.

Game On Dude, who now is headed for the Breeders' Cup Classic, covered the 1 1/8 miles on dirt in 1:48.98.

Richard's Kid, formerly trained by Baffert and now handled by rival Doug O'Neill, had to struggle for third by a neck.

The string of Grade I races began with the sixth, the renamed Chandelier Stakes. Baffert and Bejarano won that one with Executiveprivilege.

Then came the FrontRunner Stakes, and they won that one with Power Broker in an upset over O'Neill-trained Know More, a distant second.

"I was hoping for this kind of outcome," Baffert said.

No kidding.

"They were all coming into their races really well. I'm glad that Power Broker showed his stuff.

"We still have a ways to go, and as long as they all stay healthy and keep moving forward that's the main goal."

Power Broker was coming off a Del Mar meet in which he finished second, third and a disappointing fourth in three races.

Baffert blamed Del Mar's synthetic track for the poor showing and added the horse recently had a great workout.

The next race for Power Broker, after his impressive victory, will be the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

The FrontRunner Stakes, formerly the Norfolk, was renamed after the restaurant atop of the Santa Anita grandstands.

The Chandelier, formerly the Oak Leaf, gets its new name from the legendary bar in the Turf Club.

The Awesome Again, formerly the Goodwood, is named after a horse bred by Santa Anita owner Frank Stronach.

Game On Dude, who finished second in last year's Breeders' Cup Classic when ridden by Chantal Sunderland, is a son of Awesome Again.

All five Grade I races Saturday were part of the Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" series.

The FrontRunner Stakes, a race for 2-year-olds, also was part of a new "Road to the Kentucky Derby" qualifying point system. It was one of the first two qualifiers.

The other was run earlier Saturday in Newmarket, England.

With his victory at Santa Anita, Power Broker earned 10 points toward qualifying for next year's Kentucky Derby.

Baffert is no fan of the new format.

"It's too early," he said. "I like the Breeders' Cup `Win and You're In.' They should have it where you win a big prep race and you're in the Kentucky Derby."

Killing Them Softly Review | AVForums.com - UK Online

Written by Cas Harlow
published 30th September 2012

?Community? There is no community. Here in America, you?re on your own.?

Dredd, Lawless, Looper. Finally we?re getting some decent movies for adults. Two months before its US release, and still glowing after its Cannes acclaim, Andrew ?The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford? Dominik?s latest movie, Killing Them Softly, most definitely earns its place alongside the others. Indeed what sets it apart from most others ? even its aforementioned adult-rated brethren ? is that it carries some highly topical political commentary. It?s been heralded as being one of the first of the new wave of anti-Capitalist movies, following on from the ?Occupy? campaigns across the globe, but what makes it even more interesting is that this was merely incidental on the parts of the filmmakers. Perhaps that?s why it works so well.

Jackie Cogan is a professional assassin working for the Mob. When a protected card game down in still-crippled, post-Katrina, New Orleans is ripped off ? for the second time ? he is called in to clear up the mess and find out who did the job. Whilst it is ostensibly a very simple task, the situation is complicated by the potential PR-nightmare angle ? everybody knows who did it first time around, and assumes that it was the same guy ? and even further worsened by the mob?s own dire economic straits. Indeed, for the first time, Cogan finds that every single action he wants to take has to be authorised by a ?committee? of senior mob bosses. Hampered from all angles, Cogan just wants to do his job, something which used to be a whole lot easier.

Based on the 1974 novel Cogan?s Trade, by crime author George V. Higgins (who wrote several ?Cogan? books), filmmaker Andrew Dominik never expected his adaptation ? originally also called Cogan?s Trade until it was renamed Killing Them Softly ? to be some kind of a political statement. Yet whilst writing the screenplay, Dominik found that the parallels were impossible not to take advantage of. He?s been reported as having said ?what the story is about is an economic crisis in a criminal economy ? an economy supported by gambling ? and the crisis occurred because of a failure of regulation, so it seemed to be an opportunity to make a film about what was happening in 2008, to make a story about the economic crisis?.

Updating the setting to 2008 ? and to post-Katrina New Orleans just to hammer the point home ? Dominik has crafted an insightful look at modern ?Mob? mentality which would be a refreshing watch even without the political subtext. His mob bosses are unseen overlords who decide things in committee; who seldom understand the difference between doing what?s necessary and doing what they think should be done. These are guys who need the situation spelt out in very simple terms and, even then, still need to mull over it before any decision can be reached.

The situation, of course, involves two hapless low-level criminals, who sign up for a potentially suicidal job ? to rip off the Mob ? but think that they have their escape covered. They?ve got a fall guy; an obvious culprit who will plead innocence ? even under interrogation ? but who the Mob won?t believe for a second. They figure once he gets whacked, everything will get tied off and nobody will come after them.

Of course they didn?t figure on Jackie Cogan, who is clever enough to see through the sleight-of-hand right from the outset. Cogan?s problem, though, isn?t figuring out who needs to be killed; it isn?t finding the targets; and it certainly isn?t actually killing them ? his problem is those damn higher-ups that he answers to, who want everything to have a clean, easy, happy ending. And want it for a cut-price too.

What drives this piece is a series of unconnected diatribes and conversations, offered up by several of the characters during the course of the heist-tracking-killing procedure. They are seemingly mundane, innocuous tales, which probably would not have even earned a place in a Tarantino movie, but which do a stunning job at fleshing out the characters who deliver them. This isn?t about snappy, punchy quick-fix throwaway dialogue; this is about thought-provoking, resonating commentary, and character-driven storytelling.

Whether it?s the hapless low-rent duo of Scoot McNairy (the lead from the excellent Monsters) and Ben Mendelsohn (Animal Kingdom, Killer Elite and Daggett in The Dark Knight Rises) who stumble around making so many stupid mistakes that you wonder whether they?re a comedy act, or the somewhat sympathetic, almost pitiful mid-league mobster played by Ray Liotta (the Goodfellas veteran who is here on the best form he?s been on in years ? since Identity and possibly even Narc); whether it?s Richard ?Six Feet Under? Jenkins?s painfully slow Mob intermediary ? he relays all of the ?committee?s? decisions back to Cogan ? or James ?Tony Soprano? Gandolfini?s drunk-before-midday fellow hitman; they?ve all got some great little moments of dialogue, moments where the characters are slowly ? almost unbeknownst to you as a viewer ? being fleshed out and developed.

Galdolfini has little more than an extended cameo and yet he stands out in the piece ? in two almost unrelated dialogue sequences he manages to flesh out an unprecedented amount of background detail into his character and leave us with a portrait of quite an equally tragic and despicable man who still has the presence to intimidate, even if he exalts it on all the wrong people.

It?s Pitt?s baby of course, jumping at the chance to reteam with the director ? he agreed to the part by text! ? and once again surprising audiences with the breadth of his capabilities. I?ve always been concerned that Pitt would eventually slip into formulaic roles which require his Pitt-isms more than they require any kind of acting, but, along with Jesse James and The Tree of Life, this is one of his least Pitt-esque roles. Even his commendable performance in Moneyball saw a more expected approach from the star. Here he displays almost none of his trademark mannerisms, bringing intensity and intelligence to a part which could easily have just been swallowed up in the narcissistic mire that often comes to the fore in this kind of movie. There are practically no likeable characters ? they?re all either degenerate losers or nasty gangsters ? but, somehow, even playing a cold-hearted professional hitman, Pitt still manages to make you admire his character, even if you don?t necessarily want to be best friends with him. He?s the only person who appears to have his finger on the pulse; he?s the only person who knows what has to be done and is also prepared to do it.

?I like to kill them softly... from a distance.?

Before you get all worried that this may be one of those marmite films that only those who also loved The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford will like, I have to reveal the fact that I didn?t get on all that well with that previous collaboration between Dominik and Pitt. It was just too long, and too contemplative ? and it lost me somewhere on the way.

Killing Them Softly is an entirely different animal. For starters, it?s only 97 minutes long. There was a longer version ? Dominik?s first cut ran at over an hour longer, and included scenes with characters (like Deadwood?s Garrett Dillahunt, brought back in from Assassination of Jesse James, and currently in Looper) which never made the final cut ? but we have to presume that the director chose to make it much more streamlined. Whilst the Studios might have given him a hard time over another two-and-a-half-hour beast, with Pitt on board, they would probably end up losing that battle (it?s Pitt who lobbied to have Jesse James?s one-of-the-longest-film-titles-ever kept in-tact). After all, the Studios may have wanted a shorter movie, but probably would not have required it to be this short. Hopefully, it was just Dominik?s call based on the material and the angle he wanted to take. Sure, it?s a shame we don?t get to see Dillahunt at all, and, for example, Safe House?s Sam Shepherd ? here playing a fellow hitman, barely gets a single line of dialogue ? but this still feels intentional. By barely featuring Shepherd?s Dillon, his character?s name carries so much more menace. Surely this was intentional?! Besides, this is much more of a character-driven piece as opposed to the ethereal mood piece that was Assassination, and the gangster thriller structure was perhaps not quite strong enough to warrant an epic runtime. Dominik knew that he had a film that had a message; had something to say, and he clearly didn?t want it to get swallowed up by its own ego. Who knows though ? perhaps we?ll see a 150-minute Director?s Cut on Blu-ray but, so far, this feels like it?s already just about the perfect length.

Stylistically, even working with a clearly minimal budget, Dominik manages to bring forth some very memorable moments and a brooding menace that engulfs the whole production. From the very disconcerting opening credits sequence ? which spurts a cacophony of discordant notes at you as one of the characters walks down a long, dark corridor and the titles blurt across the screen ? leaves you shell-shocked. It?s a high-impact variation on those intrusive, oppressive tones that hit you during the start of another great character piece, Paul Thomas Anderson?s There Will Be Blood.

We?re treated to numerous tracking shots that take in the weather-torn dilapidated New Orleans backdrop, planting the disparate characters slap-bang in the middle of this mess. One brilliant moment has Ben Mendelsohn?s strangely loveable but utterly reprehensible drug addict loser bumbling along the equally dirty streets to meet his only-slightly-more with-it friend, played by Scoot McNairy, who we find standing on top of a discarded, broken chair, in the middle of the street. In any other film ? in any other setting ? it would likely prove so surreal that it could threaten to take you right out of the movie, but here it just seems... appropriate. Normal, even.

Dominik doesn?t just woo us with wonderful tracking set-ups, or unusual character-placement, he also throws us some really stylistically innovative sequences ? like a scene where one character has just shot up some smack and his friend is trying, desperately, to get him to answer some questions. It?s fantastic ? and so convincing ? watching him lapse in and out of focus; the screen blurring and going dark every few seconds as he barely manages a lucid thought in-between black-outs; his friend growing with frustration at the futility of the interrogation, and the viewer feeling the exact same mounting frustration at the stop-start flow (or lack thereof) of the dialogue. Genius.

Perhaps the least engaging directorial flourishes ? at least for me ? came during the slow-motion shooting sequences, where distinctly average CG touches only diminish the impact of the shots. Still, they got the job done, and there are many more subtle moments (Pitt?s sunglass-wearing hitman visage reflected over a rain-spattered window) which warmly add to the style of the piece.

As already noted, there?s more than enough substance in Killing Them Softly for it to survive without any kind of subtext. Unlike Lawless, which was a good but flawed gangster drama that only skated loosely along the edge of parallels with the current economic clime, Killing Them Softly is a much more perfected character-driven affair which also adds in a hefty but welcome extra layer of socio-political analogy. Whether it?s the frustrations over never being able to get anything done without running it past a committee of Mob bosses who likely know nothing about what needs to be done (the irony of the fact that it took half a dozen production companies just to get this film made is not lost on this reviewer either), or the fact that it becomes necessarily to kill a high-profile but innocent scapegoat just to appease a criminal underworld baying for blood (how many PR ?sacrifices? have Governments made over the last few years?). As Pitt himself would note, the political direction of the movie would not become crystal clear until the close of the movie, showing ?that this microcosm is actually saying something about the macro world?. The director also certainly does not want to take sides: Republican or Democrat, the fault lies with whichever Government has a hold of the reins ? it?s a political angle which will likely find favour amidst the majority of viewers out there; the general population of 99%ers who don?t appreciate the frankly criminal behaviour of the remaining niche group. For Dominik, the crime genre has always been the perfect place to marry up this analogy: where else would you be surrounded by so many crooks whose motivations were all purely financial?

?America is not a country... America is a business! Now pay me my god-damn f**king money!?

Economic crisis will likely be the flavour of the month for quite some time to come, but Killing Me Softly is much more than just a pulpit for topical political ?Occupy? commentary. It perfectly blends these weightier themes with strong direction, worthy performances and insightful characterisations, telling a character-driven tale which stands on its own independent of its welcome subtext. It?s a great little gem, perhaps ultimately lacking the absolute refinement required to make it a classic masterpiece, but still undoubtedly one of the better movies of the year, ranking up there with Dredd, Looper and Lawless in September?s Big Leagues. The summer may be over, but it looks like the competition to find the best movies of 2012 is just hotting up.

Give it a shot... softly.

Killing of wolf pack criticized by key Washington state lawmaker

Washington State completes a sharpshooter cull of a wolf pack that had been feeding on livestock. KING 5's Gary Chittim reports.

By Miguel Llanos, NBC News

The chairman of the state Senate committee that oversees?Washington's Department of Fish & Wildlife tells NBC News that the killing of a gray wolf pack in recent days was?"inexcusable" and that he is demanding?answers about why the agency thought it was necessary.??

"I find it inexcusable that we allowed ourselves to get to a place where killing the entire pack was the necessary decision when other non-lethal options ? within the department and with ranchers ? were not totally exhausted first," said Sen. Kevin Ranker, chair of the Senate Natural Resources and Marine Waters Committee.?

"I find it ironic that the attacks on livestock that caused this situation ... took place on a ranch that has been outspoken about the removal of the pack and has refused to work with the department to implement prevention measures successfully adopted by other ranchers," he added.

The department gave the order to kill the entire pack, estimated to be eight wolves, after?the pack?became accustomed to attacking cattle instead of relying on wild prey.

"To say I am disappointed in the department's actions would be a gross understatement," Ranker said. "I can tell you, however, as the chair of the committee with oversight over the Department of Fish & Wildlife, this story is far from over."

In a letter Friday to the department, Ranker demanded to know:

  • What specific actions the department?took before authorizing the kill;
  • Exact costs associated with killing the pack;
  • What actions the department will take to avoid a repeat.

The department "has provided very general descriptions of a few non-lethal measures taken" under the state?plan for managing gray wolves,?he said in the letter. "The wolf plan however includes an extensive list of husbandry techniques, non-lethal deterrents, and relocation options that were not utilized in the case of the Wedge pack. The fact that the Department pursued removal of not just individual animals, but the entire pack, clearly evidences the agency's failure to effectively use these non-lethal tools to deter wolf-livestock depredation."

Ranker also said the department's strategy for managing gray wolves?could backfire. "I fear that the Department?s actions?... will be viewed by some who do not support wolf recovery as setting a precedent that localized public pressure can dictate wolf plan implementation, including lethal removal decisions," he stated.

Maggot Guts Lead to ID of Dead Body

Police in Mexico recently discovered a body burned beyond recognition in a remote patch of woods just off a country road. The hands and feet were missing. There was no physical evidence nearby except a school graduation ring. The body was in such bad shape that investigators couldn't even determine the gender. The only soft tissue available for genetic analysis was a burned fragment of liver, but attempts to get a DNA profile from this bit of evidence proved futile.

However, forensic investigators were able to find useful genetic material in an unusual place ? inside the guts of the maggots infesting the corpse's neck and face.

"This is the first reported case of analysis of human DNA isolated from the gastrointestinal tract of maggots used to identify a victim in a criminal case," a group of researchers from Monterrey, Mexico, wrote in a report this month in the Journal of Forensic Sciences.

Ten days before the body was found, a man claimed his daughter had been abducted. He recognized the ring, but couldn't tell if the badly burned corpse was his daughter. The investigators took a DNA sample from the man and then looked at the gut contents of three blowfly maggots from the dead body. They found traces of human DNA in the bugs' stomachs. With this evidence, they found that the victim was female, and they were able to run a paternity test, which came back with a 99.68-percent match to the man, confirming that this was his abducted daughter.

Maggots are commonly used to construct timelines for crimes, as larval development can indicate how long a victim has been dead. Attracted by gases escaping from a decomposing corpse, blowflies often show up within minutes of death, infesting parts of the body and laying their eggs there. It's the larvae that result from these eggs that serve as a timestamp; depending on the temperature they develop from egg to winged adult in a matter of 10 or so days.

But the researchers say this grim case shows how else the insects might be used as clues.

"If maggots are encountered in association with human remains, investigators could utilize this approach if the extraction of DNA from other sources is not possible," wrote the researchers, led by Marta Ortega-Mart?nez, of Universidad Aut?noma de Nuevo Le?n.

Bioengineers design rapid diagnostic tests inspired by nature

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? By mimicking nature's own sensing mechanisms, bioengineers at UC Santa Barbara and University of Rome Tor Vergata have designed inexpensive medical diagnostic tests that take only a few minutes to perform. Their findings may aid efforts to build point-of-care devices for quick medical diagnosis of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), allergies, autoimmune diseases, and a number of other diseases. The new technology could dramatically impact world health, according to the research team.

The rapid and easy-to-use diagnostic test consists of a nanometer-scale DNA "switch" that can quickly detect antibodies specific to a wide range of diseases. The research is described in an article published this month in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

The design was created by the research group of Kevin W. Plaxco, a professor in UCSB's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. He noted that, despite the power of current diagnostic tests, a significant limitation is that they still require complex laboratory procedures. "Patients typically must wait for days or even weeks to receive the results of most STD tests," said Plaxco. "The blood sample has to be transported to the lab, its content analyzed by trained personnel, and the results sent back to the doctor's office. If we can move testing to the point of care, it eliminates the lag between testing and treatment, which would enhance the effectiveness of medical interventions, and, for infectious diseases like STDs, reduce transmission."

The key breakthrough underlying this new technology came from observing nature. "All creatures, from bacteria to humans, monitor their environments using amazing 'molecular nanoswitches' that signal the presence of a specific target by changing their structure," said Alexis Vall?e-B?lisle, a postdoctoral scholar and co-first author of the study. "For example, on the surface of our cells, there are millions of receptor proteins that detect various molecules by switching from an 'off state' to an 'on state.' The beauty of these switches is that they are able to work directly in very complex environments such as whole blood."

Plaxco's research group teamed with Francesco Ricci, professor at University of Rome Tor Vergata and co-first author of the paper, to build synthetic molecular switches that signal their state via a change in electric current. This change in current can be measured using inexpensive electronics similar to those in the home glucose test meter used by diabetics to check their blood sugar. Using these "nature-inspired" nanoswitches, the researchers were able to detect anti-HIV antibodies directly in whole blood in less than five minutes.

"A great advantage of these electrochemical nanoswitches is that their sensing principle can be generalized to many different targets, allowing us to build inexpensive devices that could detect dozens of disease markers in less than five minutes in the doctor's office or even at home," said Ricci.

The authors noted that it may take several years to bring the devices to the market.

The additional co-authors are Fan Xia of Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, China; and Takanori Uzawa of Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan.

This work was funded by the National Institute of Health, the Fond Qu?b?cois de la Recherche sur la Nature et les Technologies; the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MIUR) project "Futuro in Ricerca;" and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, through the Grand Challenges Explorations Grant.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama has appealed to veterans and military families in defense-focused southeast Virginia, casting himself as a president who is ending foreign entanglements and aiding returning soldiers with educational opportunities.

Obama chided rival Mitt Romney for saying, in secretly taped remarks months ago, that nearly half of Americans believe they are victims entitled to government help.

Obama said instead of victims, he sees veterans who have served "with bravery and distinction" and military families wondering if loved ones will "come home safe and sound." Obama was introduced by Sen. Jim Webb, a conservative Virginia Democrat who is a former Marine and Navy Secretary.

Samsung has already patched 'dirty USSD' vulnerability for Galaxy SIII

'Dirty USSD' code embed can reset your Samsung Galaxy S III and other TouchWiz devices

If you were worried about stumbling onto a malicious website and accidentally wiping your Samsung Galaxy S III or other TouchWiz smartphone or slate, you can probably breathe easy. It's likely you already have firmware on your device which isn't vulnerable to the so-called dirty USSD code, and if not, you can download it now, according to Samsung. The company issued the following statement on the matter: "We would like to assure our customers that the recent security issue concerning the Galaxy S III has already been resolved through a software update. We recommend all Galaxy S III customers download the latest software update, which can be done quickly and easily via the Over-The-Air (OTA) service." It turns out we couldn't reproduce the bug earlier as we already had the latest update, and you should probably check to see that you do, as well -- and don't forget to watch what you click.

New ad seeks to show Romney's compassionate side

WASHINGTON (AP) ? TITLE: "Too Many Americans"

LENGTH: 60 seconds.

AIRING: Mitt Romney's campaign did not disclose where the ad is running.

KEY IMAGES: Romney, wearing a check-pattern shirt open at the collar, speaks into the camera. "Too many Americans are struggling to find work in today's economy. Too many of those who are working are living paycheck to paycheck, trying to make falling incomes meet rising prices for food and gas."

He says more people are living in poverty than when President Barack Obama took office and that 15 million more are on food stamps.

"President Obama and I both care about poor and middle-class families," Romney says. "The difference is my policies will make things better for them. We shouldn't measure compassion by how many people are on welfare. We should measure compassion by how many people are able to get off welfare and get a good-paying job."

Romney adds that his plan will create 12 million new jobs over four years to help families escape poverty and strengthen the middle class.

ANALYSIS: Romney is trying to convince voters that he can do a better job fixing the economy than Obama but, beyond claiming that his plan would create 12 million jobs, he doesn't say anything in the ad about what his plan entails.

The ad is an attempt to show a more compassionate side of Romney after his campaign was stung by the release of secretly recorded video of Romney speaking at a private fundraiser in May and disparaging the "47 percent" of Americans who don't pay federal income taxes as government-dependent Obama supporters who see themselves as victims and won't take responsibility for their own lives.

Public opinion polls conducted after the "47 percent" was made public last week give Obama the advantage in battleground states, including Ohio and Virginia.

The ad tries to cast Romney as someone who understands the challenges faced by families struggling to make ends meet under trying economic times. The sluggish economy has long been front and center in the presidential contest. Democrats have sought to portray Romney as a wealthy former venture capitalist who cannot relate to the worries and economic woes of average folks.

Romney's campaign has tried on several fronts in recent weeks to warm up the former Massachusetts governor's image for voters, including a speech by Romney's wife, Ann, at the Republican National Convention that focused heavily on Romney's personal qualities, including his compassion.

Obama is running an ad in seven battleground states that is somewhat similar in style to Romney's. In that ad, the president also speaks into the camera and promotes his economic plan and a "new economic patriotism."

This type of straightforward candidate-as-narrator ad is more commonly used during the closing days of major races. Both of these ads come as early voting gets under way in some states.

Great Self Improvement Tips That Can Help You Reach Your Goals ...

It?s smart to help yourself and make proactive choices that can change your life. This can help you think on where to start in making great changes when it comes to your life. All you should know is where to begin to help yourself.

Understand what you want from your life. Following through is the next step. Not taking action to change your life just means you?ll be stuck with your current one forever. You need to create and implement a plan of action in order to realize your desires.

TIP! Instead of focusing on your own achievements, ask others about theirs. This gives you an opportunity to find out the talents and achievements of the people around you, and it might help you gain more respect for others as you learn more about their character.

As you begin your personal development journey, accept that fact that you truly do deserve the best of everything! Know that you owe it to yourself to do your best. When you complete your journey you?ll be secure in the knowledge that you did the best you could and no regrets are necessary.

One great personal development goal you can set is to practice being more selfless. You can strengthen your inner character by using self-sacrificing behavior, to help better other people?s lives. When you can balance sacrificing for others with meeting your own needs, you will gain the emotional versatility required to become a better person.

Remaining humble will always benefit you. We are but a cog in our universe. Remember to learn from other people and keep in mind that you don?t know everything. Keep this in mind and open yourself to the ability to learn from others. By keeping an open mind in all situations, you can let others teach you.

TIP! Take the time to read what has helped others to be who they want to be. Learn from their mistakes and think about following a similar path if your goals correspond to theirs.

You may find it helpful to discuss your issues with a counselor or other trusted professional, such as your pastor. These professionals are equipped to discuss very deep, emotional issues and often have many years of experience. Counselors and pastors are ready and willing to listen to you and help you work on your problems. By speaking with a professional about your problems, you can lead a much healthier and enjoyable life.

Overreacting to a situation will cause you unnecessary stress. Relax, sit back and analyze your situation without overreacting. If you make a mistake, you can always fix it or deal with it. When you start feeling anxious about a situation, focus on the positive things, not the negative ones.

Sexual capitol is a new trait researchers have just discovered, and they feel it is important to have. Sexual capitol does not mean employing your sexuality as a tool in procuring what you want out of life. This means to use charisma instead. While some may not have the best social skills, developing sexual capital will help you in many aspects in your life.

TIP! Having a degree and the ability to do the job is usually more important than which school you attended. Some places, such as banks and investment firms, actually do care where you got your degree.

Check out a few popular books on developmental techniques that you find particularly interesting. A really good book on the subject may set you on a course that will change your life. Before you pick a book, read the reviews to make sure that it is worthwhile because some self improvement books are better than others.

You should feel comfortable in your own skin and being the person that you are. Employ your skills, talents and abilities to make your self improvement program successful. Rather than worrying about the skills you don?t have, concentrate instead on the skills you do possess, and the success you can achieve with them.

Reduce the stress in your life. Do not over-react to setbacks: this will only cause you more stress. You have to understand things go wrong on occasion when you?re trying to achieve a goal. Instead of freaking out, you should come up with methods of overcoming the obstacle. It?s not the end of the world.

TIP! When thinking about your personal development goals, set what standards you think constitutes the best. Setting high standards for yourself can help you achieve personal development you desire.

Avoid shopping as a way to comfort yourself. Instead of shopping, spending money and adding more charges to your credit card bill, keep busy with a hobby. Not only will you have fewer debts to deal with, but your house will be less cluttered with stuff that you do not really need.

It is essential to have a clearly outlined goal, when working toward improving personal development. Therefore, state a goal for yourself that is detailed and specific. These are the kinds of goals that will get definite results.

You might?ve heard that listening can be as vital as speaking. This is particularly sage advice if you are working on your personal development. In fact, one of the most important people you should learn to listen to is yourself. Listening to what you tell yourself will help you know what you need and how to best improve yourself.

TIP! Try new things. Challenging yourself opens up a whole world of possibilities.

Always do the best you can. You should always want to be the best you can be. You will never be number one at anything, but we can try to be great. Try boosting your worth inside your field so that you can boost your self-esteem as well.

Organization is key if you expect to keep track of your progress. You can stay on track if you tackle small things first. A daily planner, online organizational software, or written journal can all provide great methods for tracking personal development goals.

Do not overdo it when you are trying to achieve your personal development goal. It is just as important to know when to stop as it is to try your hardest. You should take care of yourself when you are working towards a goal. Short-changing your body in order to meet personal development goals is a terribly counter-productive form of self-improvement.

TIP! Examine your inner self instead of your external appearance. It really does not matter what expensive clothing you wear, or if you look like someone from a magazine shoot.

The principles you believe in need to be put into practice. Every person?s identity rests on a set of beliefs that are vital to them. When your system is woven together with integrity, your confidence will rise when you put it into action. This also helps to make you a consistent person. This is an essential character trait.

So, as you have seen, it is true that self help requires research, work, and effort to start making changes that you can keep applying to your life. Personal development is a lifelong project that you can and should continue to enjoy. By using the tips from this article, you too can achieve a better life

Failure can be devastating to one?s ego when one is trying to better oneself through personal development. Treat failure as a chance to learn and grow. Failure is just one more way to become cognizant of your weaknesses and strengths. So, each failure needs to be a proud moment to you, as you now have another piece to your personal puzzle.

Are there any fighters who can beat Jon Jones?

Jon Jones' win on Saturday night was awe-inspiring. He survived a grotesque armbar, and came back to win with fourth-round submission. He seems to keep getting better and better with each fight, this time incorporating jiu-jitsu skills into his win. At the moment, he appears unbeatable.

Are there any fighters in the UFC who can eventually take him on and win? Any fighters who can take time to study Jones, figure out his every move, and then finally solve the Jon Jones puzzle?

Dan Henderson: The one-time PRIDE and Strikeforce champion was supposed to fight Jones before he was injured and UFC 151 was canceled. He has already put in the time and effort to fight Jones, and may already have him figured out. His age is an issue, but Henderson still wants the fight.

Alexander Gustaffson: One of Jones' biggest advantages is his reach. He was able to hold Belfort at bay throughout the fight by simply extending his arm. At 6-foot-5, Gustafsson is an inch taller. He has a fight lined up with former champ Mauricio "Shogun" Rua who will show if "The Viking" is ready for the next step.

Chael Sonnen: Based on Sonnen's inability to handle Anderson Silva in their last fight, there is no reason to believe Sonnen could beat Jones. However, the run-up to the fight would be so much fun. Considering the UFC put Jones up against a middleweight who lost a title shot, integrity of the belt doesn't matter as much as entertainment or making money. Sonnen has already shown he can get under Jones' skin in a way no one else has, and that just may give him the edge in a bout.

Anderson Silva: Could he beat Jones? Yes. Will this fight ever, ever happen? No. Silva keeps talking about wanting a fight with welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, and he does have a few challenges waiting for him at middleweight.

Who is missing from this list? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.

Among the worries for investors was the financial crisis in Spain. Protesters there are clashing with police near Parliament, and the nation's borrowing costs increased in an auction of its debt.

Declining stocks beat advancers by about 3-to-1. Volume was heavier than average, 3.6 billion shares.

importance of fruits | Bodybuilding, Supplements, Diets, Workouts ...

Fruits are a delight to the human senses. Fruits are the most attractive, delicious, and nutritious of all foods available. Decorating a fruit tray may sound interesting but it can be a real hassle if you aren?t aware of the different fruit types. The importance of fruits in your diet can be attributed to the fact that they contain many vitamins, minerals and fiber, which are necessary for optimum digestion.

Fruits are the best source of natural sugar and are packed with anti-oxidants. They are high in fiber and low in calories. Fruits are also low in sodium so they help reduce the chance of gaining weight due to fluid retention. Protection from illnesses is yet another benefit we gain from consuming fruit.

Fruits also protect your body from cancer-causing free radicals and slow down the effects of aging.

Fruits are at their best when eaten in the raw and ripe state. A fruit platter is a lovely addition to any gathering. A large dish decorated with various fresh fruits arranged in a pattern can be extremely delicious and appetizing. All fruits should have their individual places in the platter so that it gains a uniform appearance.

Here are a few fruit platter ideas which may be of use to you:

For a perfect fruit platter you must add a variety of fruits with different colors and textures.
Be careful with fragile fruits such as berries which get crushed easily.

Place them on the top of the bowl as garnishing.

The key to create a good looking fruit platter is to cut and slice your fruits into similar sized and shaped pieces.
You must ensure that you choose your fruits well. Shop for bright colored fruits with different textures in order to add variety to the platter.

It is very important that all the fruits are washed well and dried.

A fruit platter looks even better when you make two sections of fruits. One section can have whole fruits such as grapes, cherries, and berries and the other section can have sliced fruits which include apples, bananas, and oranges.
You can also slice melons and pineapples so they are displayed in their rinds.

Iran readies domestic Internet, blocks Google

11 hrs.

DUBAI ??Iran plans to switch its citizens onto a domestic Internet network in what officials say is a bid to improve cyber security but which many Iranians fear is the latest way to control their access to the web.

The announcement, made by a government deputy minister on Sunday, came as state television announced Google Inc's search engine and its email service would be blocked "within a few hours".

"Google and Gmail will be filtered throughout the country until further notice," an official identified only by his last name, Khoramabadi, said, without giving further details.

The Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA) said Google ban was connected to the anti-Islamic film posted on the company's YouTube site which has caused outrage throughout the Muslim world. There was no official confirmation.

Iran has one of the biggest Internet filters of any country in the world, preventing normal Iranians from accessing countless sites on the official grounds they are offensive or criminal.

But many Iranians believe the block on sites such as Facebook and YouTube is due to their use in anti-government protests after the disputed re-election of President Mahmoud Ahamdinejad in 2009.

Sites expressing views considered anti-government are also routinely blocked.

Iranians commonly overcome the government filter by using virtual private network (VPN) software that makes the computer appear as if it is based in another country.

But officials have long spoken of creating an Iranian Internet system which would be largely isolated from the World Wide Web.

"In recent days, all governmental agencies and offices ... have been connected to the national information network," deputy communications and technology minister Ali Hakim-Javadi was quoted as saying by the Mehr news agency.

The second phase of the plan would be to connect ordinary Iranians to the national network, he said.

According to Iranian media, the domestic system would be fully implemented by March 2013 but it was not clear whether access to the global Internet would be cut once the Iranian system is rolled out.

Even using VPNs, many Iranians suffered serious problems accessing email and social networking sites in February, ahead of parliamentary elections.

The Islamic Republic tightened cyber security after its nuclear program was attacked in 2010 by the Stuxnet computer worm, which caused centrifuges to fail at its main uranium enrichment facility.

Tehran, whose nuclear programme is suspected by the West of being aimed at developing a bomb, accused the United States and Israel of deploying the worm.

Authorities said in April a computer virus was detected inside the control systems of Kharg Island - which handles the vast majority of Iran's crude oil exports - but the terminal remained operational.

Communications and Technology Minister Reza Taqipour said last month Iran needed to develop its own network to ensure the safety of the country's information.

"Control over the Internet should not be in the hands of one or two countries," he said. "Especially on major issues and during crises, one cannot trust this network at all."

Iran threatened in May to take legal action against Google over its decision to drop the term "Persian Gulf" from its Google Maps and leaving the waterway between Iran and the Arabian peninsula nameless.

Many Arab states refer to the sea as the "Arabian Gulf", a term Iran considers unacceptable.

RolePlayGateway is a site built by a couple roleplayers who wanted to give a little something back to the roleplay community. The site has no intention of earning any profit, and is paid for out of their own pockets.

If you appreciate what they do, feel free to donate your spare change to help feed them on the weekends. After selecting the amount you want to donate from the menu, you can continue by clicking on PayPal logo.
