Only 12% elected for good, and no more than 17% in any demographic sub-group. 58% opted for evil, with the main variation being by gender (61% of men, 54% of women). 27% said that neither answer applied or both equally.

With regard to religion in Britain, 17% viewed Britain today as too religious, 36% as too secular, 31% as balanced between religious and secular, and 17% expressed no opinion. Men and the under-40s were marginally more likely to describe Britain as too religious, Conservatives, the over-60s and Londoners as too secular.

49% agreed that religion still provides critical guidance for our everyday lives, with 40% dissenting and 12% unsure. The age cohort with the lowest level of agreement was 25-59 years (43%). While the peak of 61% among the over-60s was to be expected, less predictable was the 50% recorded for the 18-24s.

Respondents were next asked whether the Church of England continues to carry out a valuable role, a question obviously prompted by Her Majesty the Queen?s speech at Lambeth Palace on 15 February.

YouGov?s respondents were split on this issue, with 42% agreeing, 41% disagreeing, and 16% unsure. Most support for the Church came from Conservative voters (55%), partially justifying ?the Tory Party at prayer? sobriquet; least backing was found in Scotland (32%).

Since the Church of England is established (albeit only in England), it might seem slightly odd that 67% contended that religion should have no place in public life, being entirely a personal matter. Belief in God stood at 38%, with 21% unsure, and 33% disbelieving. Believers were twice as numerous among Conservatives (45%) as Liberal Democrats (22%), and they were also somewhat concentrated in the over-60s (44%) and in Scotland (45%).

The final topic, triggered by the Bideford case, was whether local councils should be able to hold prayers at the beginning of their meetings. 53% of adults thought that they should (peaking at 66% of Conservatives and 65% of over-60s), 32% that they should not, with 15% undecided.

Depending on which forecasting is accurate, pure play stations may be giving traditional broadcast companies a run for their money or calling CEO?s like Bob Pittman their new boss.

I Heart Humans

According to the Clear Channel CEO, another reason that services such as Pandora can?t claim to be Internet radio is because they lack deejays and local customization. ?You need human beings to bond to? he argues. This brings me back to the fact that streaming Internet radio is a consumer-driven market inside an arena which obviously encourages human bonding through sharing, socializing, and a common love for music. Furthermore, users can listen outside their geographic location, but still receive local advertising with some service providers. On top of that, the users? ability to create individual channels coupled with their quick adoption of new technology means that consumers might create local customization all on their own. Businesses can just stick their ads right into pre-made, targeted stations. Some might even say that half the job is done. Many companies outside of the radio industry are creating branded stations, too. I think what Bob Pittman means is that there are no media giants or celebrities associated with Internet radio. There are plenty of humans, and ridiculous amounts of bonding.

For the most part broadcast radio talent ranges from deejays airing live, on-location, and sometimes by pre-recorded computer program. Some terrestrial stations have a unique voice to brand them, but no actual live deejays. There are still strong voices in terrestrial radio, but my guess is that if they suddenly started broadcasting online only, that their loyal listeners would follow. Otherwise, Sirius XM and Howard Stern wouldn?t still be around. Ultimately, consumers will follow the music and personalities, not the companies airing them.

Best of Both Worlds

Clear Channel ultimately champions traditional radio, but has latched on to streaming radio platforms to give the consumers what they want, which is choice and personalization. I Heart Radio broadcasts all of its terrestrial Clear Channel stations online, digital only stations, custom radio, and strong social network features. The difference is that these features are all in one product, which Pittman believes is the better approach. Some Clear Channel stations are also broadcasted on Sirius XM Radio. Bob Pittman is very passionate about terrestrial radio, but also wants to be a big name in streaming music. This is probably due in part to what Pandora CEO and founder Tim Westergren has witnessed, which is that ?Internet radio is beginning to draw advertising dollars because it?s targetable. It?s a richer experience, which leads to higher click-through rates.? Sounds like a case of a good idea replicated by a bigger company that may eventually put the originators out of business.

Leveling the Field?

According to a Futuresource consumer research study, ?Living with Digital?, the number of US and European Internet users listening to Internet radio or music streaming services on a regular basis has remained relatively unchanged since 2009, at 38% in the USA and 30% in Western Europe. However, the study also shows that total Internet radio listening hours in these territories has increased by 27% and around 20% respectively. That means that the preference of music platform towards a pure-play model is increasing. Online services have experienced rapid growth thanks to the strength and speed of cloud computing and a renewed desire of consumers to discover music online. Internet radio will continue to be popular even as it faces growing competition and holds scattered mind share and consumer attention. The best bet for advertisers is to use streaming radio advertisements as part of a larger radio marketing campaign so that they work together, filling in all the gaps where each option falls short.

Apple launches new legal attack on Samsung phones (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Apple Inc raised the stake in an intensifying global patent battle with Samsung Electronics by targeting the latest model using Google's fast growing Android software, a move which may affect other Android phone makers.

Apple has asked a federal court in California to block Samsung from selling its new Galaxy Nexus smartphones, which use Google's newest version of Android, called Ice Cream Sandwich, alleging four patent violations including new features such as a voice-command search function.

Galaxy Nexus, the official debut of which was delayed by Samsung in October to pay respect to Apple's co-founder Steve Jobs, is the first phone running on the newest Android version before the platform is widely adopted by hardware manufacturers such as HTC Corp and Motorola Mobility. HTC and Motorola are also in separate patent disputes with Apple.

In a lawsuit filed last week in San Jose, Apple said the Galaxy Nexus infringes on patents underlying features customers expect from Apple products. Those include the ability to unlock phones by sliding an image and to search for information by voice.

"Google cannot deny its undivided responsibility for any infringement findings. A preliminary injunction would not prohibit the sale of a Galaxy nexus just because it's called Galaxy Nexus or looks like one: it's all about which patents it infringes on," said independent patent expert Florian Meuller.

"I am absolutely certain that...for the preliminary injunction motion the Galaxy Nexus was singled out because it's so new, and important."

Samsung said in a statement on Monday that it is aware of the filing by Apple in the California court.

"We continue to assert our intellectual property rights and defend against Apple's claims to ensure our continued innovation and growth in the mobile communications business," Samsung said in a statement.

With the new lawsuit, Apple is opening up another legal assault on the South Korea-based company after taking Samsung to the same court in April of last year. In the earlier case, Apple alleged that Samsung illegally copied iPhone and iPad design features and the look of its screen icons. That case is still going on, although in December Apple lost a bid for a preliminary bar against Samsung for selling Galaxy phones and tablets.

Apple acknowledged the setback in the new action and said now it is suing over new products and different patents.

In addition to the California cases, Apple and Samsung are waging more than 20 legal fights in at least 10 countries in their war for global leadership of smartphone and tablet markets.

The new case in U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, is Apple Inc v. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, et a 12-00630.

The Greek debt conundrum, explained (The Christian Science Monitor)

Berlin ? For almost two years, the Greek government and European Union officials have been convening in meeting rooms to figure out how to rescue the Greek economy as protesters throng the streets of Athens, angry over growing austerity. Meanwhile, the possibility of a default looms. 

Why is the Greek economy in trouble?

Greece has very high sovereign debt ? in 2011 the state owed around ?350 billion ($461.6 billion), or 160 percent of GDP, the highest rate in Europe. It has also lost the trust of private investors ? it can?t borrow anymore to meet its obligations.

When Greece joined the eurozone in 2001, it misreported its real level of public borrowing in order to meet the entry guidelines. It got access to cheap capital, because the euro offered  much lower interest rates than the drachma. Money poured into the country and wages, particularly in the public sector, rose significantly, although at the same time tax evasion and corruption were endemic.

In 2009, newly elected Prime Minister George Papandeou revised the budget deficit figures, implying that his predecessors had "cooked the books." Greece's credit ratings started to slide. In the same year, the Greek government estimated the size of the black market, the untaxed economy, to be about 30 percent of the declared economy.

In 2010 Greece?s debt rating was lowered to ?junk? status and the interest rates on Greek bonds rose to a level that made borrowing unsustainable, requiring Greece to seek international help from the European Union and International Monetary Fund. The country was told that it had to undergo severe budget cuts and tough austerity measures ? a cure, some critics say, that has become part of the problem.

?Greece is trying to massively reduce its public borrowing without anything to offset these measures, like [devaluing] the currency,? says Simon Tilford, Chief Economist at the London-based Centre for European Reform. ?So the cuts in spending become self-defeating because the economy is contracting faster than they can implement cuts.?

Could Greece go bankrupt?

In a sense, it already has. ?Under no plausible scenario could Greece service its public, and, for that matter, its private debts,? says Mr. Tilford. ?It is fair to say that, yes, Greece is insolvent.?

For months now, the Greek government has been negotiating with its private creditors about the size of a "haircut," a debt forgiveness that the EU, the European Central Bank (ECB) and the IMF have demanded before they give more financial aid to Athens. A restructuring of Greek debt ??? the deal negotiated at the moment foresees a write-off of about 70 percent ??? amounts to what is referred to as an orderly default.

But the deal hasn?t been finalized yet. Some private banks and hedge funds oppose it, possibly in hopes of getting back a larger share by holding out or on cashing credit default swaps, insurance policies against default.

On March 20, Greece needs to pay back ?14.5 billion ($19.1 billion). If it does not get fresh money until then, it will have to declare bankruptcy ? a ?messy? default.

It is something the founders of the eurozone did not even consider. The treaties regulating the currency union have no provisions for such a procedure, nor for a member leaving or being forced out of the union.

What has Europe and the international community done to help Greece?

 The political will to keep the eurozone project intact and the fear of contagion ? the flight of investors from other eurozone members seen as vulnerable, like Spain and Italy ? have for a long time made a Greek default anathema in European capitals. After lengthy negotiations, a first bailout package worth ?110 billion ($145 billion) in loans was agreed to between the EU and IMF in 2010, linked to demands for reform of the Greek public sector and cuts in the budget. Realizing that more money was needed, a second bailout package was agreed on in 2011, but payments will only start once Greece has implemented more austerity measures.

The ECB has bought ?50 billion ($66 billion) worth of Greek government bonds so far, but it has refused to be part of the haircut deal negotiated with private investors.

European leaders have repeatedly considered limiting Greece?s economic independence. The German finance ministry floated a plan to install a commissioner in Brussels controlling the Greek budget, but dropped the idea amid fierce opposition from Greece and other eurozone countries. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicholas Sarkozy earlier this week proposed the creation of a frozen account, into which Greece should pay revenue in order to service creditors.

But only a far reaching debt write-off, including the ECB, could give Greece the breathing space it needs to recover, according to Thomas Klau, Senior Policy Fellow at the European Council on Foreign Affairs in Paris. ?The second bailout will not be the last international intervention in Greece,? he says.

What has Greece done to solve the crisis?

 ?We have seen astonishing fiscal austerity in Greece,? says Mr. Tilford. ?They might not have done enough in terms of structural reforms, but the cuts in public spending are unprecedented.?

All in all Greece has adopted five austerity plans since 2010 (the latest, agreed to by the coalition government this week, is due for a parliamentary vote this weekend). Athens has pledged cuts in spending amounting to ?40 billion ($53 billion) and the sale of public assets is expected to raise another ?50 billion ($66 billion). Up to 150,000 public sector jobs are to be scrapped until 2015, while pensions will be cut and the minimum wage reduced. But in regards to all these targets, Greece is lagging behind in the implementation. 

?The Greek government is defeated by its own administration,? says Mr. Klau. ?There is so much resistance and incompetence in the bureaucracy that it is fair to say, Greece is currently the only EU country that does not have a functioning administration.? It is this lack of government, Klau argues, which prevents much needed reforms from being implemented, much needed investments from being made, and the country from improving its competitiveness. ?The whole rescue operation for Greece could fail.?
